Welcome to The Shoulder Unit
The Shoulder Unit at the Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth was established in 1991 and is dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and research of injuries and musculoskeletal conditions affecting the shoulder and elbow.
In the following video, our Consultants give an overview of the Unit, including what common shoulder and elbow problems they see and the treatment options available.
The Unit treats all shoulder and elbow problems, including sports injuries, complex or revision procedures, trauma and conditions associated with aging.
Our team has close links with many national and regional sporting organisations and performing arts companies. We treat players from a majority of the UK's premiership rugby clubs as well as elite athletes from other sports including tennis, Olympic and Paralympic athletics, football, iceskating and motocross.
Led by two of the UK's top orthopaedic surgeons (Mr Philip Ahrens, Mr Carlos Cobiella), the Shoulder Unit can provide consultations, specialist imaging, physiotherapy and state of the art surgical facilities under one roof at London's famous Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth.
The Shoulder Unit is fully equipped to surgically and conservatively manage shoulder and elbow disorders utilising the latest techniques and state of the art technology. Our Consultants are specialists in keyhole surgery which has shorter and less painful recovery times than conventional open surgery.
If you have shoulder problems or symptoms that you are worried about, you are able to attend our private, self pay urgent care centre Casualty First. Open 7 days a week, Casualty First's highly experienced doctors can arrange onward referrals to the Shoulder Unit. Referrals are routinely covered by medical insurance companies.
