Consultant Biography

Mr Henry Colaço

Mr Henry Colaço is a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in conditions of the shoulder and elbow.

Mr Colaço completed his basic surgical training and clinical research in London before undertaking higher surgical training in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery on the South East Thames rotation, including King’s College Hospital, and Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospitals. He then completed two specialist training fellowship posts in Shoulder and Elbow and Complex Upper Limb Surgery at University College Hospital, and St George’s Hospital, and the prestigious British & Elbow Shoulder Society (BESS) Travelling Fellowship in France. He was appointed as a Locum Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, and an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at University College London.

In 2017, he was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital. His special interests include upper limb trauma and complex reconstructive and sports shoulder, elbow, and wrist surgery. He has an interest in developing novel techniques of reconstructive arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery, including superior capsular reconstruction for patients with irreparable rotator cuff tears.

His research interests include the use of simulation to enhance surgical skills training and improve patient safety, and he received the ‘Innovation in Simulation’ Award from the British Orthopaedic Society in 2015. He is a founding member of the BESS Simulation Working Group, and served a 2-year term as a member of the BESS Education Committee.

Mr Colaço firmly believes in a patient-centred approach to treatment in order to tailor operative and non-operative techniques to the individual. When surgery is required, he uses minimally invasive techniques where possible to achieve optimal results and faster rehabilitation.  At the Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth Mr Henry Colaço forms part of their specialist unit, The Shoulder Unit.
