Skiing and Snowboarding Injuries
Ski and snowboard injuries involving the shoulder and upper limb are common at this time of year, as people enjoy ski holidays abroad. The injuries range from broken bones through to soft tissue injury about the shoulder and elbow region. The most common injuries are fractures of the clavicle (collar bone) and humerus, dislocations of the acromio-clavicular joint and the major shoulder joint itself (glenohumeral joint), together with injuries to the rotator cuff tendons.
The management of ski injuries has significantly evolved in the past few years and specialist advice is often important in order to obtain the best possible outcome.
Occasionally, surgery is undertaken in the ski resort. However, frequently patients return to the UK for advice and treatment, including surgery.
At the Shoulder Unit, we try to ensure that all patients who have sustained a ski or snowboard injury and are referred to the Unit are seen within a 24 – 48 hours. We have great expertise in dealing with such problems.
